General Interest Area to be Specifically Addressed by the SIG
Research, education, and clinical practice on stigma. For example, areas to be address include (but are not limited to) researching psychological mechanisms related to stigma, devising ways to intervene with various stigmatized populations (e.g., individuals who struggle with mental illness, members of the HIV/AIDS community, GLBT individuals, individuals who struggle with obesity), and educating the community (college, psychological, clincial, etc.) about stigma.
Mission/Objectives
The Special Interest Group on Stigma will identify and devise research related to the mechanisms of stigma, will study possible clinical applications of psychological research related to stigma, and will provide a forum for the open discussion of ideas for work on stigma-related issues.
SIG Activities
Currently, we do not have specific meetings planned (other than to meet each year at the World Conference). As the membership grows and our mission becomes further defined, we will propose additional activities to meet the goals of this subgroup of ACBS.
Description of Membership
STIG members comes from a variety of practice areas and locations. For example, members at the roundtable discussion at the ACT conference where the idea of creating a SIG on stigma was born included researchers at various US universities, leaders of the ACT community, clinical providers in the US and abroad, and graduate students interested in this topic. Anyone from the ACT community -- who is a current paid member of ACBS -- is welcome to join.
