Abstract:

This article (written in Brazilian Portuguese) discusses mindfulness as a concept that originated in Oriental meditative practices, became part of behavioral medicine starting with the Kabat-Zinn's stress reduction program and then spread out to office based psychological treatments. Its conceptual vicissitudes throughout this journey are reviewed and discussed. Implicit traces of mindfulness (like emotional tolerance and decentering) are argued to have been present in the clinical practices of traditional behavioral and cognitive therapies since their beginnings. Some clinical implications are discussed.
