ACT/CBS Background and Training: PhD in clinical psychology with specialization in applied behavior analysis. Studied radical behavioral approaches to psychotherapy as part of candidacy exams circa 1995 and discovered the papers of Ferster, comprehensive distancing, and FAP. Have attended symposia at AABT by Dr. Steven Hayes, and full day workshops by Drs. Robyn Walser, Lance McCracken, Jenna LeJeune, and Dayna Lee-Baggley. Completed fACT 6-week webinar facilitated by Dr. Kirk Strosahl, Self-study of ACT treatment textbooks, treatment manuals, videos, and self-help books.
ACT/CBS Experience: Have used ACT principles in my work with chronic pain patients over the past 20 years. Have supervised many trainees in ACT for pain over the past 15 years. Have conducted effectiveness and process research on PF processes.
Additional Information: 1) Supervised the Doctoral Dissertation of Heather Simister, PhD: Randomized Controlled Trial of Online Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Fibromyalgia, which was accepted for publication in Journal of Pain.
2) Co-facilitated a symposium with Dr. Lance McCracken on pain acceptance at the Joint Meeting of the British and Canadian Pain Societies in 2011.
3) Facilitated a symposium on acceptance based treatments for chronic pain at the annual meeting of the Canadian Pain Society in 2007
4) Trained psychology graduate students and Clinical Health Psychology Residents in functional contextualism and ACT for the past 15 years.
